Neil Smith and Ben Mitchell

Liam Humphreys, CEO FremantleMedia UK Unscripted, has announced a number of key senior appointments as part of an ongoing commitment to broaden the scale, ambition and output of FremantleMedia UK’s factual entertainment label, Boundless.

Neil Smith, the former joint-MD at betty, is to become the new Managing Director of Boundless, reporting into Humphreys. Ben Mitchell, formerly Head of Popular Factual at Shine TV, joins in the newly-created role of Director of Programmes.

Cal Turner, currently the Executive Producer of the BAFTA-award winning series The Apprentice, is promoted to the role of Head of Popular Factual, and will continue to oversee The Apprentice. John Comerford becomes Head of Boundless West and Factual Features, with a newly-expanded role that includes responsibility for factual features programming within Boundless.

Liam Humphreys, CEO FremantleMedia UK Unscripted, commented: “Boundless is already a market leader in factual, with an enviable pipeline. I am confident that the best-in-class talent that we are bringing into the label will create and develop brand new, game-changing factual entertainment formats and build even further on its formidable reputation.”

Neil Smith, incoming Managing Director of Boundless, added: “The atmosphere of creative excitement at Boundless is palpable and, for me, irresistible. I’m so happy to be leading such a strong label and superb team at this time of reinvigorated ambition.”

Ben Mitchell, incoming Director of Programmes at Boundless, commented: “Boundless has an impressive reputation for making top quality, hit series like The Apprentice and Grand Designs. Joining their talented team to help create the next generation of ambitious factual entertainment shows is a hugely exciting prospect.”

As joint-MD at betty, Smith was in charge of all production and development at the indie and, under his creative leadership (as Creative Director and then MD), betty experienced unbroken year-on-year growth.  Key programme credits include: The Undateables, Tricks of the Restaurant Trade, Ugly House to Lovely House, and Mission Survive.  Recent commissions include the forthcoming series Gone To Pot for ITV and Get Fit Fast for Channel 4.

Ben Mitchell joins from Shine TV where he co-developed and executive produced the BAFTA and RTS award-winning series The Island with Bear Grylls for Channel 4.  During his 20 year career, he has also produced and directed many successful popular-factual formats, including Shipwrecked, Undercover Boss, Kevin McCloud’s Man Made Home and The Hotel.

Neil joins the team next month and Ben joins in the New Year, along with Damian Pitman – newly-appointed Director of Development, Boundless.
